DAY CARE

Age Concern Leicester operates fifteen Day Care centres, Monday to Saturday, each week, across the City of Leicester. We cater for the following groups: Older People with Learning Disabilities; Older People with Physical Health Difficulties and Older People with Mental Health problems and frail older people.

Day Care consists of transport to and from home to a centre, either at Clarence House, Catherine House or at various other centres in the community. There are light refreshments and a hot dinner served during the day. Stimulating activities and social contact is provided as well as outings in the better weather.

Referral to this service is through the Social Care and Health Department of Leicester City Council.

There are opportunities for
volunteers to work in Day Care centres assisting staff with their duties. This could include being involved in escort duties on vehicles, supporting people in activities of their choosing. Developing activities and assisting on outings and trips. We like to utilize our volunteers skills to the best advantage of our service users.

Community Befriending Service

If you are lonely, isolated and needing a friendly chat with someone then why not join our FREE service?

What is the Community Befriending Scheme?

It will be a daily or weekly call to people aged over 50 who live alone and are unable to get out and about. Our volunteers will phone you to chat and make sure all is well.

The service can help for a short time when family and friends are on holiday, or when you have been unwell, or it can simply be a friendly chat on a regular basis, it's your decision.

When is it available?

From Monday to Friday 9.00am to 4.30pm. We will phone at a time that suits you.

Who is it for?

The Telephone Befriending Service will operate across the city. In Braunstone we will be developing a volunteer visiting service. We will visit isolated and lonely people in the  Braunstone community.

How do I join this scheme?

Contact us and we will arrange for a member of staff to visit you. They will explain about the service and decide if it is right for you. There will be a simple form to fill in with the co-ordinator on the visit. We will then arrange a volunteer to phone you on whatever basis you decide.

Who can refer?

Any person can refer to this service. A family member, nurse, social worker, friends or your doctor. It is your decision to be involved. There will be no cost whatsoever to yourself.

What happens if I don't answer the phone?

We will ask you to let us know if you won't be in to take our call. If you don't answer we will call back then contact your next of kin or friend.

What will it cost me?

NOTHING! This is a FREE service.

For further details telephone 0116 222 0569 and ask to speak to one of the community Befriending Team.

COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES (CMHS)

Age Concern Leicester provides services in the homes of older people with mental health problems and their carers. We provide regular visits to older people in their own homes and support their carers so that they can take a break from their caring responsibilities.

We also have two social contact groups for older people with mental health problems on a Monday and Friday, covering the east and west of the city respectively. We have one Asian carers group who meet monthly for social contact and support.  Referral for the service is through the Community Mental Health Team for older people.

There are opportunities for
